給与に関するいろいろな英単語についてまとめました。Kei Narujima の税務英語豆知識から改訂しながら移行中です。

Compensation / remuneration　給与

　 

「給与」は以下を意味します。

• 給料。官公庁・会社などで支給される給料・諸手当の総称。（出典：goo辞書）
• 給与所得とは、使用人や役員に支払う俸給や給料、賃金、歳費、賞与のほか、これらの性質を有する給与に係る所得をいいます。（中略）役員や使用人に支給する手当は、原則として給与所得となります。（出典：国税庁）

給料・手当等、全てを含みますので compensation と remuneration が使えます。両方とも以下の通り、月給、賞与、手当その他を含むざっくりした意味で使えるので非常に便利です。

• Compensation is the combination of money and other benefits (= rewards) that an employee receives for doing their job (Source: Cambridge Dictionary)
• Remuneration is the total compensation received by an employee. (Source: Investopedia)

例文を挙げました。

• 役員給与には、給料、賃金、福利厚生、賞与、手当、及び金銭以外の支給等、様々な形がある。

Directors’ compensation takes various forms, such as salaries and wages, benefits in kind, bonuses, allowances and non-financial payments. 

• 役員給与は不相当に高額であるべきではない。

Directors’ remuneration should never be more than is reasonable.

Compensation は「賠償金」という意味でも使われますので要注意です。

これに対し、「wage」、「salary」、「fee」などはもう少し狭い意味で使われます。それぞれ例文を挙げました。

Wage　賃金、時給ベースの給与等

来年4月1日から、英国の最低賃金は上がる。

From April 1 next year, the minimum wage in the UK will increase.

Salary　年収ベースの給与等

年収を12で割って月収を計算した。

The yearly salary was divided by 12 to get the fixed monthly salary.

Fee　弁護士等への報酬

我々の弁護士報酬は原告に支払われる金額の一定の割合である。

Fees for our legal services are based on a percentage of the amount of money awarded to the plaintiff.
